California Institute of Technology is Caltech, one of the most exclusive colleges in the world with more than 2400 students enrolled, and is recognized as one of the top educational institutions in the world. The university is one of only a few American technological institutions that place a strong emphasis on teaching the pure and applied sciences, and it is well known for its strengths in science and engineering.
The facility was founded by Amos G. Throop in 1891 as a prep and vocational school, and around the beginning of the 20th century, it began to lure eminent scientists like George Ellery Hale, Arthur Amos Noyes, and Robert Andrews Millikan. The vocational and preparatory schools were disbanded and divided.
The 124-acre main campus of Caltech is situated 11 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles in Pasadena, California. Old Town Pasadena and the Pasadena Playhouse District are also easily accessible by foot, making them popular weekend destinations for Caltech students.
A master plan for the 22-acre campus was created by architect Bertram Goodhue, who was engaged by Hale in 1917. In order to be in keeping with the environment, the school’s identity, and Hale’s pedagogical philosophy, Goodhue created the campus’ overall layout and developed the physics building, Dabney Hall, among other buildings. Traditional Southern Californian Spanish mission architecture had a big impact on Goodhue’s plans for Caltech.
A 46-member board of trustees, 46 of whom were privately appointed, oversees Caltech as a non-profit organization. Trustees serve five-year terms and are eligible to retire at age 72. The trustees choose a president to lead the institute as its chief executive officer and manage its operations on the board’s behalf. They also choose a provost to lead the institution’s academic operations beneath the president, along with eleven other vice presidents and other senior roles. In 2014, Thomas F. Rosenbaum was appointed as Caltech’s ninth president. A permanent trustee group and an investment office oversee the management of Caltech’s endowment.
Biology and Biological Engineering, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Engineering and Applied Science, Geological and Planetary Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Physics, Mathematics, and Astronomy are the institute’s six main academic divisions. All professors, lecturers, research associates, fellows, and the university librarian are included in the voting faculty of Caltech. Admission requirements, academic standards, and curricula are set by the faculty. The Faculty Board, which represents the faculty, is made up of 18 elected faculty members and other top administrative figures. Professors who work full-time are expected to instruct lectures, carry out research, counsel students, and carry out administrative tasks like sitting on committees.
A tiny, four-year research university with a strong residential component, Caltech has somewhat more graduate students than undergraduates. Since 1949, the institution has held accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. A quarter system is used at Caltech, with the fall term beginning in late September and ending before Christmas, the second term beginning after New Year’s Day and ending in mid-March, and the third term beginning in late March or early April and ending in early June.
The strictest test scores in the country are required for admission to Caltech. Caltech was listed by CBS News as the third-hardest institution in America to get into for the 2022 school year. The middle 50% of freshmen in the class of 2023 who took the SAT had scores between 740 and 780 for evidence-based reading and writing and 790 and 800 for math, for a total score between 1530 and 1570. 35–36 was the middle 50% range for the ACT Composite score. The middle 50% range for the SAT Math Level 2 was 800-800. The middle 50% range for the SAT Biology Subject Test was 760-800, 760-800 for the SAT Chemistry Subject Test, and 760-800 for the SAT Physics Subject Test. Caltech established a test-blind policy in June 2020, under which test results will not be required or taken into account.
