The West Bengal apex court said it expected the director of IIT, Kharagpur to take strict action in the matter of the unnatural death of a third-year mechanical engineering student in his hostel. Taking note of the allegations of ragging, the court directed that proper counseling sessions starting at the grassroots level be ensured and the director of IIT Kharagpur would be personally responsible for implementing the same.

Professor Virendra Kumar Tiwari, Director, IIT, Kharagpur, was present in the court as directed in connection with a petition by Saleem Ahmed, father of Mechanical Engineering student Faizan Ahmed. The student’s body was found last year on October 14, 2022, in the hostel room of the institute. Ahmed, a resident of Assam’s Tinsukia district, has been demanding the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the unnatural death of his son.

It is expected that strict, stringent, and preventive measures will be taken by IIT, Kharagpur in connection with this incident and also to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future, Justice Rajasekhar Mantha said in the order on Friday. Expressing concern over the well-being of the students of the premier institute imparting technology science education, the court observed that a large number of students with superior intellectual abilities come from different economic and social backgrounds and with different emotional qualities, he said.

The court observed that these differences affect the conduct of the students. sometimes restricting their free expression and interaction. Justice Mantha said that any incident of ragging makes life worse for such students. The court said that it may psychologically scare the students to suffer for different periods of time. The court directed the state police to submit a written report or orally to the court on February 6 about the status of the investigation. At the same time, compliance with the instructions of IIT will be considered during the hearing on 13 February.
