Doctors, nurses will not have to give TOEFL and IELTS exam to work in UK

Doctors, nurses, dentists and midwives will no longer need to take English language tests such as TOEFL and IELTS to work in the UK.

Doctors, nurses, dentists and midwives wishing to work in the UK will no longer need to take English language tests such as the TOEFL and IELTS, thanks to the introduction of the Occupational English Test (OET).
OET is an international English language test that evaluates the proficiency of healthcare professionals who want to register and work in an English-speaking setting in communication.  Earlier, candidates had to write with the UK’s two healthcare boards, the Nursing and Midwifery Council and the General Medical Council, and take OET for tests such as TOEFL or IELTS for visa applications.

Sujata Stead, CEO of Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment, which conducts the OET, said: “The UK Home Office has streamlined the English language test by ensuring that doctors, dentists, nurses, and midwives who have previously been certified by the relevant professional body have already passed an accepted English language test, they do not have to sit for another test before entering the UK on a Tier-2 visa.”

“This change, announced September 2022, will guarantee that healthcare facilities all over the nation have access to the staff they require, he said. All Tier-2 (normal) visa applications submitted after October 1 will be subject to this modification.
