Harker Singh Randhawa: IFS Dream Kept Him Going, AIR 10 in UPSC CSE 2021 on 6th Attempt

Harker Singh Randhawa views Civil Services as a calling rather than a profession. The quiet lad from Gurugram, who was unexpectedly thrust into the spotlight after receiving the all-India rank 10 in the just-released UPSC CSE 2021 results, believes that:

“Civil service should not be seen solely from a professional perspective. Consider it a public call. This calling ought to be internal. You should only pursue it if you are prepared to join the nation’s governance in order to selflessly serve the people.

Join us as we walk you through Harkeerat’s arduous UPSC journey, where he suffered five setbacks before achieving great success on his sixth attempt, and learn more about the inner calling that drove him to repeatedly attempt the UPSC Civil Services Exam.

IFS: A TEENAGE DREAM

Harker has only aspired to join the Indian Foreign Service and work as a diplomat since he entered his teens. This obsession with IFS went beyond a simple job decision. It was a greater calling for him. Deep down, he began to sense a desire to serve the nation and its citizens, and the Civil Services provided the ideal platform to do so. As a result, joining the civil service became a goal, and choosing the Indian Foreign Service was favored.

I was actually breathing while I was in the dream. When I closed my eyes, while I was studying, while I was riding the subway, it was there with me all the time,” he told the media shortly after his UPSC victory.

SUCCESS IN THE SECOND EFFORT

He claimed that when a dream comes from within, your heart and soul scream for it, keeping you awake. The quantity of failures, therefore, becomes completely irrelevant. You’ll want to keep making an effort to fulfill it. In the end, it was the passion of his ambition that brought success—and success in a big way, with a Top 10 ranking after six tries!
