The important report pointed out that the states with the highest proportion of small schools in 2022 were Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. At the national level, this figure was 17.3 percent in 2010, 24 percent in 2014, 29.4 percent in 2018, and 29.9 percent in 2022. And the states with the highest proportion of small schools in the 2022 report include Himachal Pradesh at 81.4 percent and Uttarakhand at 74 percent.

However, the report noted that some states show a decrease in the number of small schools, such as Uttar Pradesh from 10.4% in 2018 to 7.9% in 2022 and Kerala from 24.1% in 2018 to 16.2% in 2022. The latest Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) study surveyed a total of 19,060 villages in rural India covering 3,74,544 households and 6,99,597 children in the age group of three to 16 years.

The proportion of multi-grade Class II and Class IV also shows a steady increase over the past decade, the report said. For example, the proportion in grade-2 classrooms stood at 54.8 percent in 2010, 61.6 percent in 2014, 62.4 percent in 2018, and 65.5 percent in 2022. Growth over 2018 levels is visible in Gujarat from 50.9% in 2018 to 69.3% in 2022 and Chhattisgarh from 71.3% in 2018 to 79.5% in 2022 among other states. The survey found that at the national level, all indicators related to the right to education are showing small improvements at the 2018 level.

The number of schools with girls’ useable toilets to increase from 66.4% in 2018 to 68.4% in 2022. The proportion of schools with access to drinking water increased from 74.8% to 76%, and the proportion of schools with books other than textbooks was used. In the same period, the number of students increased from 36.9 percent to 44 percent.
